I started with CL with my brother. When he left home - I was stuck without a helper. So I graduated to RC ...

CL - I had a Veron Vortex .... Veron Raider .... and then Dad brought me back a RTF Plastic Kingcobra from USA with WenMac 049 spring starter glow and 'firing rockets' !!!!

We flew on the front lawn but RC was across the road in friends field.

Flew the Testors control line planes and free flight tissue gliders back in the day. That's what convinced me to fly strictly electric and no IC when I got back in the hobby.

Take care and thanks for posting at WattFlyer!!

From 1965 to 1972 I flew control-line planes, mostl thing like a FlightStreak or a Ringmaster, and some thick winged combat wings, with McCoy .29 -.35 engines. These were not real fast airplanes.

One day I needed more props so I went to the hobby shop to get some. Bill (the owner) also showed me a plane his son was selling. It was a Spectrum high speed combat. This thing had a Supertiger G21 .35 engine with a huge venturi, thin wings and a Binky baby pacifier as a fuel tank. Bill told me how to get the motor started and then release the fuel from the pacifier.

My buddy and I played with the engine for about 15 mins before it started, I got my fingers hit so many times they were numb. (no chicken stick) so I used a broken prop to flip it over. When it started I knew I was in trouble, I had never heard an engine like that up close. It was turning an 8 x 8 prop at about 18000 rpm.

I went to the center checked the controls so I gave my friend a wave to release the plane. Holy That thing was 1/2 way around the circle before I realized he had let it go.

I think it was a full circle before I was turning fast enough to have the plane in front of me instead of over my left shoulder. Later timings showed the plane flew at 135 to 140 mph.

I still have the plane but I have no where near enough nerve to fly it.

As bad as that plane was, the worst thing I tried was flying a Combat Kitten with a Cox .049 on 8 foot long lines!! It was windy and my dad thought the little circle inside of some trees would protect me from the wind.

I was turning so fast it seemed like I couldn't fall over, but I got so dizzy when the plane ran out of fuel, I fell to my hands and knees, then fell over from that position. I had double vision and the world was spinning. When I finally could only see 1 image of my dad, he started the d thing again.

This went on over and over getting a little better each time until I simply did not get dizzy. But I decided not to try control line jet.

SuperTigre ....... I loved the G61 ....

I had a number of them and couple I piped ..... ground RPM on a 11x6 was over 19000....

In fact my party piece caused one to shatter internally.

Photo here shows one of my WOT4's with tuned pipe G61 up front ... in bits !!

I used it for shows and one 'trick' was to launch her vertically and let her scream up into the clouds revolving as she went up ... literally out of sight - all you could hear was that pipe ! Flip her over (sound was a definite change ....) let her come down vertical at WOT .... haul her out just before she hit deck ! We reckon that G61 used to hit over 22000 rpm .....
That day - there was a bang and puff of crap out the pipe and into the deck she went ...

Of course crowd loved it !!

Never did like "speed" particularly with control line even a "Bouncer" (1960 Aeromodeller free plan?) seemed fast with a humble Mills 75 on 20 ft lines.

The ultimate in 'slow' CL was my scratch built DH4 (with the same Mills!).

Note the slack lines!
In fact the pull was so low that during this flight a puff of wind made them go completely slack but being basically a FF job it flew quite happily over my head which gave me time to "cushion" the point when the lines went tight again so as not to rip off the wings! No drama for the rest of the flight.
50 years later and "grounded" it still has the Mills in it.
