I really enjoyed participating in (losing) the warbird build contest. I was thinking that It would be pretty neat to have a scratch build contest with a $100 spending limit. Each participant would be required to prove that ALL the componants and materials added togather are $100 or less. Of course the Tx wouldnt count. Other than that, the sky is the limit.

I know several folks who could do it. What do you all think?

Great idea, I like it! But I do see a couple of issues,,,(maybe)
1) no rules! People love to nit-pick and B or crab over rules,,,,lol
2) Foamys, Maybe a $50 limit on foam planes, anyone can throw together a cheap foamy
It would be harder to hang $100 worth of stuff on a foamy and still fly. lol

I know this is your gig, and I don't want to sound like I'm raining on your parade.
How does this sound, $100 limit, scratch built something from the year you were born.... This twist would make people have to think and research a bit. Plus it would give the
Bers something to crab over.

I'd be in! I have some parts laying around just asking to be put into a plane. I was going to build something sometime this spring anyhow, this way I can see what everyone else is doing.

It would take a little research just to make sure I stay under $100, but I like the idea a lot! I spent way too much on my Daddy-O, now it's time for some fiscal responsibility. (I heard that on the news once, I think it means quit spending so much money on your toys!)

EDIT: A quick double check of prices on the motor/esc/servos I have came to $55.... So It looks good to me!

Im glad Ive sparked some interest. What Im actually talking about is a plane that can go up in the air for a $100 bill. Thats the REPLACEMENT COST of all the parts. You know; $4 each for 4 servos= $16, a motor $12, an esc $17, battery $14, 2 sheets of 1/16" balsa $1.57, 1/8 pint of dope $2.50, 3 sheets tissue $0.50, 6 channel Rx $16......................get it? (BTW these are just made up figures)

It would be ok to use scrounged parts, but the REPLACEMENT cost would have to be counted. Otherwise one could count the "scrounged" major components from a $600 plane as free and just build a new fuselage and call it a scounged up scratch build.

For another example, if you can get a bundle of 1/4" FFF for $30 and it has 40 sheets and you only use one sheet to make the plane then you would count the cost as $0.75. If you went dumptster diving/begging at job sites and got a few sheets for free, then the cost would still be $0.75.

Heres another example. Lets say I can get a gallon of taunting nitrate dope for $50 counting shipping.....if I use 1/8 pint on my model then the replacement cost would be $1.57 (if Im still awake enough to do math)


I think this would make everything stay on an even playing field. It might also help to require folks to list where they are getting their prices from. One of the goals in my big idea is to show greenhorns that a man can build some pretty cool planes for not a lot of scratch, and take said greenhorns thru both the processes of procuring and building. When I first started, I had not the slightest idea of where to get anything. I didnt even suspect that a zippy little parkflyer could fly for less than $250. We might even cap the cost of the Tx at $200, but thats just an idea....I know that some of you all are mighty partial to your 2.4 GHz EXPENSIVE radios. I like 72 MHz, but thats just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions. (PLEASE lets not argue the point)

My planes are much uglier....you can usually see the hot glue "strings" hanging off them.....but I love the patched up crash trest sled!

Thought I would throw this in.......it's not strictly a warbird, but one based on a Lippisch ww2 era luftwaffe experimental. made it as a trainer for my bigger heavier combat planes. The wings and fuse came from Canterbury sailplanes in New Zealand, as Factory seconds, for $25.00. These were cut and shaped to suit. The vertical stab is coreflute, cut from a real estate sign, so no cost there. The electrics came from "lowpricerc", a relatively new company with very good prices Total for everything was just under $62.00. So $87.00. The prop was $2.50, and guestimate the tape covering at about $5.00 ( left over rolls). $94.50 AUD all up. And it flies brilliantly, better than a stryker fast or slow, good and bad weather and a lot more robust. Our dollar is better than yours right now, so maybe the figure is a little higher. looking forward to seeing some others
