V-tails and ailerons

Default V-tails and ailerons

Looking at building a swept wing edf with a v-tail some time soon. My question is this- is there any advantage in keeping the V-tail mix with ailerons as well? To be more specific, the plane is an experimental ww2 design that had the option of a conventional or v-tail. I was going to simply use ailerons for turning, and the V tail just as an elevator. Any thoughts either way?

I cant stand to fly a plane that doesnt have a functional rudder, so Id definitely go with the V tail programming.

There are advantages to both.

With elevator only function, you may be able to get by with a single servo and one chanel in the radio. That saves weight and is simpler to set up.

If you end up needing two servos for mechanical reasons, then Id definitely go V tail. The only difference is in the programing in the radio.

If you dont normally use rudder, there is no real penalty other than the initial setup time. On the other hand, it will be there if you need it/want it.

As Larry says it is perfectly possible to fly on elevator and aileron only, bank and yank, I do all the time.
Just a small point. If the plane tends to turn a bit naturally you would normally correct this with the rudder trim but the only trim you have available is the ailerons. This would mean you are flying with one up a bit and the other down a bit which will tend to aggravate any wing drop in a stall.

I dont see that it makes any difference if it's vee tail or conventional.

Your real question is do I want 'rudder' control?

If it were a normal tail would you have used a working rudder?..
If 'yes' then use V tail mixing. If 'no' then just use the V tail as an elevator.

Thanks for the input everyone. To clarify the question further, it's simply because I have had very little to do with V-Tails, and am not sure how well they compare to conventional ones. To my way of thinking, If V-tails were superior, everyone would use them. I only see them occasionally, and suspect that the cruciform tail gives better aerodynamic performance, or are simpler to construct, or some other reason. Correct me if I'm wrong. In my twin tail planes I dial in some rudder with the ailerons to help tighten the circle, and was considering doing the same with the V-tail.
