How is pattern different from 3D?

In my opinion, and take it for what it's worth...
Pattern flying simulates a routine that would be more closely associated with a real aircraft.
3D on the other hand, has maneuvers that only a model aircraft could perform. Tourqe rolls and hovering a foot or less of the ground for example, could never be done by a full scale. At least not that I have ever seen anyway.
I don't see the pattern events much anymore. We used to do the SPA events at my club in Virginia but it has gone by the wayside now in favor of things like IMAC meets which seem more 3Dish to me.
