Default easystar comes home after 4 months!!

hi all,
here's the story.......
last spring, I bought myself an easystar and installed a mega 16/15/4, apc 6x4e infront of 11.1 2100 mah 20c.
it really rocked!! unlimited power!
i set up a 6 megpix camera on the bottom and took some great pics of my acreage, but i wanted to get higher photos.

July 1st;
nice day, about a 15-20 mph wind.
i set out to get the highest shots i could, and ofcourse, that was a bad idea.
i was soooo high, the plane was a meer speck. the only way to see what heading it was on was to see how it reacted to controle inputs. i'm sure you guys know what i'm talking about.....
sky high and snapping pics, i inadvertantly start to head towards the sun, i watch on the other side of the sun for her to appear but nothing..... i scan around the area for a moment and catch sight again. but, now for some reason, the easystar is not responding to my sticks!!! i try and nothing happens. it just circles. for about 2 min i watch the speck overhead, straining to see it, I realize.........
IT'S A SEAGULL I'M TRYING TO FLY!!!!!!!
during that time, my plane was drifting down wind out of sight.
i searched high and low of weeks, went on long hikes and even convinced a fullscale pilot to take me up so i could look, but no luck.
it took a couple months but slowly i let it go.

time goes by........

last week my wife calls me at work, and is very excited, "THE PLANE, THE PLANE!" she exclaims. doing her best tatoo impression. "IT'S BACK!!"

a farmer about 13 miles to the south-west of us was working in his field and said he saw something that didn't look right, went to check it out and there she was. pretty much unharmed, a bit sun faded but that's it.
the guy said he took the camera and plugged it into his computer and there were pics of my yard getting smaller and smaller. almost like a map to get right to my house!
i've had about 4 flights on her since she came home , but now i'm a bit more conservative with my altitude.

An excellent success story of a lost plane recovery.

You didn't mention it, but I'm assuming you had the good sense to put your name/phone number on the plane somewhere.

Where I fly a number of people have come up to me and ask if I've lost a plane. They say they found 1 (or 2, or 3, etc) that have fallen out of trees, but there's no information on them so they can get in touch with the owner. I'm sure there are around 6 - 8 planes that have lost a home with no way to contact the owner.

wow..great story

There are good and bad things to getting a plane to fly 'hands off'

it makes it nice for AP but when you lose sight it will just keep flying.... man - 13 miles!!! I'd say you had that plane balanced perfectly.

I had a flyaway, but I managed to find mine that day. No damages on mine either. Glad you got the Star back.

Great story. Are you gonna print and frame a shot of the farmers land from an AP photo to give to the farmer?

hmrbri:

Sure glad you got your plane back. A Mega powered Easy Star is a really nice package. If you are not doing so already, please consider placing an ID sticker on or in your planes. I, being an AMA member, use the AMA id tags. They work great, easy to install. Congrats again on your recoup!

Who need a name and address tag on the plane when it's photographing it's own way home? LOL

(Yeah, I know, this is the extreeme exception to the rule. but ya gotta admit, it is cool!)

Or - you could just put a name tag on a few dozen trees!
