Default looking to build a VTOL

i understand i can use a drone control board,,,,is that true?....also if thats true is it hard to set up.....also what would be a good control pannel to use.thanks

It really depends on exactly what type VTOL you are attempting.

For something like a scale model of the "Pogo" its likely that any 3axis heading hold capable gyro can do the job.

For a scale Osprey or Harrier it would be more difficult and need a more complex gyro system for best result. (even though an Osprey has been done with no gyro, but it couldn't transition back to hover for landing reliably.)

so what you are saying or havent said the control board will work or will not work....it would be like the ospray that iam looking to do

To resurrect an old thread , about 20 years ago I made a XFV-1 and I believe probably made the first ever fixed wing Vertical take off , in Australia at least.

Now Ive just got back in the hobby after a 15 year break and its all Electric for me now.

I believe I can make this work with a 3-axis stability module , (never existed back in the day)

So thats my next project . I believe I will be able to make a controlled take off with Electric & 15x4 3D prop and a controlled landing too. Hoping ailerons will take care of torque and not bother with the complication of a contra rotating prop.

Interesting project but a lot of 3D planes will do that now. I don't think it will be quite the challenge you expect.

You should remeber that a drone board controls the lift motors (ie the thrust) directly for an almost instant response in both roll, pitch and yaw.
All hover capable planes use this sort of system.
The issue is will a successful 'hover' stability system handle the transition to horizontal flight. Drones get over this problem by not actually "flying".

If your VTOL relies solely on the effect of aerodynamic forces on control surfaces should handle the transition well enough but to be able to hover things get much harder.

With enough power and light weight even an EDF can ROG vertically.

nothing like bursting someones bubble , and your right Ive touched the tail to the ground on prop hangers before, no 3axis gyros back then though , I guess I just want to finalise the project I started 20 years ago

Now that winged V1 is cool.
I want to revisit the XFV-1 to get me in the right direction, Then I'll have another attempt at vectored thrust , Something else I failed on back when.

Some months ago I was offered a Vectored thrust kit to do a review (for Banggood from memory) Not enough reward in it for me so I declined.

which thrust kit was this?
i find these units are usually very heavy and weigh the plane down making it way to tail heavy and requiring a heavy battery to the nose
