Default Trip report, Mon Valley R/C Club E-Fly in

This past weekend we attended the Mon Valley R/C Clubs 4th annual Electric Fun Fly in SW Pennsylvania. It is a very nice club field with a group of members that is second to none I tell ya! What a nice bunch of folks it was. They made us feel welcome from the second we pulled in with the camper Saturday morning, til we left on Sunday. The field is very nice shortly cut grass and very smooth. I had a bit of a hard time with the grass since I’m used to a paved runway… a few nose over’s on landing but nothing was hurt.

We had absolutely perfect flying weather both days, Sat was about 75 and very little wind and Sunday was about 80 and once again very little wind. So little wind in fact that I was able to trim out the slow stick for a contest they had called “don’t touch the sticks” and I was able to let it fly on it’s own for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. More on that later.

There were about 45 pilots there and everyone had quite a range of very neat stuff. Everything from Slow Sticks to 2, yes 2, 1/5th scale Waco’s… another guy had one there on Saturday just like mine! Different motor though.

Got to meet a few Wattheads there too! Unbalanced prop, Rcav8r, Azaar, and a couple others… can’t remember the names though…

(will she do a Knife Edge Loop Doug?!)

There were a few competitions and some nice turbine, and Heli demos both days. The turbines were really cool!

On Saturday they had a balloon bust and a limbo event, Sunday they had an Endurance contest where you had to take off, fly for 6 minutes and land… easy enough until you can’t use your watch or a timer! I entered it and figured hey I can count to 60 6 times easy enough. Well I lost count about 4 times and had no idea how long I was up so I figured I’d land. My time was 6:10 so I won that event… based on pure luck really.

The second event was the “don’t touch the sticks”. You had to takeoff and you had 1 minute to trim it out how you wanted it so I put the slow stick into a wide left trun with a touch of up elevator and set the Tx in the chair. 2:30 later I grabbed it since it was still climbing but still perfectly centered over the field. I was worried it was getting a bit too high though so I grabbed it. Well I won that one too by well over a minute.

The big capper on the event was they gave me the Best of Show award for my Waco! That one surprised me based on so many of the Beautiful planes that were there.

Oh and we one a few things in the door prizes too…. A subscription to RC reports and a couple coupons to some online vendors. My son won a t shirt and hat and some other small stuff as well.

I got three things this past weekend. Sunburned, Tired and some great new Friends! All in all a great trip!

Nice report Bill! I'm sure the guys at Mon Valley appreciate your effort.

My club is planning a Slow Stick competition for this fall. Your report has now got me adding a couple more events (endurance, timed flight and balloon pop ).

It was a lot of fun Pat. The competition was cool and there was a wide variety of planes in it. It the "don't touch the sticks" there was my slowstick and a beautiful 3 meter sailplane! and a few others in between those two!

Thanks for the update and pictures Bill. Glad to see you haven't lost your touch on winning things. You know you're lucky when you can win a contest that you can't touch.

That Waco looks Huge sitting there. Did I miss the maiden report somewhere? It sure is pretty.

No Tom she still hasn't flown.

I'm still waiting on batteries. Unfortunatley the place I ordered them from did not specify they were back ordered when I agreed to send them the $300... When I ordered them I thought I would have plenty of time to get them in and ready to fly before the event but alas it wasn't to be.

Tip for vendors... If you don't have something tell people before they order and commit their money...

Still though, it was a blast.

That's too bad you're having to wait. It looks like it's running and ready to take off in your 5th picture.
